Advancing motion control with shape memory alloy technology

Pioneering SMA motion control for industry.

— Profile

Pioneering the future of automation

Kinitics Automation develops and manufactures motion control products powered by shape memory alloy (SMA). One moving part and fully electric control deliver solutions that are safer, cleaner, and more reliable than the motors, gearboxes, and pneumatics they replace — enriching the businesses and industries that build on them.

Our mission

Automate industry with shape memory alloy. Kinitics is committed to delivering solutions that are safer, cleaner, and more reliable.

Our vision

A world where industry moves on SMA: zero-venting valve control for energy and process plants, lightweight rotary actuation for aerospace, and precise, compact motion for advanced manufacturing — all built on Kinitics’ proprietary SMA technology.

— Our story

From a motorcycle clutch to industrial actuation

Based in Vancouver, Canada, Kinitics Automation has its origins firmly entrenched in the automotive and power-generation sectors. Renowned for its pioneering work in motion control solutions utilizing Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) materials, Kinitics produces a unique range of linear actuators and piston pumps, all powered by the company’s revolutionary Bundled Wire technology.

The inception of SMA’s application traces back to 2012, when the company’s founders — in their quest to engineer a compact and lightweight clutch actuator for motorcycles — recognized the inadequacy of conventional fluid power technologies. This realization spurred the birth of the inaugural Kinitics Piston Pump.

Milestones include the development of Bundled Wire technology, innovative utilization of high voltages, integration as a power source and control mechanism within hydraulic systems, consistent performance across millions of cycles, and exceptional levels of precision and accuracy — setting new standards in the industry.

“We are excited to work with NGIF and its upstream investors in pursuit of methane emission reductions. Access to the end-user has allowed us to sit down and listen to their needs, paving the way for us to address those needs with a purpose-built innovative solution. The opportunity to test and demonstrate our solution in industry relevant settings will help to accelerate the technology roll-out process while breaking down the commercial adoption barriers.”
